John Phares Jones served in the Civil War as a private in Company B, 151st Regiment Indiana Infantry. John died while serving in the war on June 25, 1865, in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, as a result of contracting "bloody flux."

John was married to Cilicia E. before 1853. Celicia died on February 25, 1856, in Porter County, Indiana. One child resulted from this union: Frank W. Jones.

John remarried on January 8, 1857, to Charlotte E. Claflin at the home of Robert P. Jones in Center Township, Porter County, Indiana; A. Nickerson performed the marriage ceremony. To this union three children were born: Edwin C. Jones, Catherine "Kitty" Jones, and Cartha E. Jones.

After John's death on January 25, 1865, his widow Charlotte remarried to George Culp on June 28, 1868, in Porter County, Indiana. The marriage ceremony was preformed by H. H. Tillotson, Jr., and recorded on August 10, 1868.
