Reuben Hendrickson,
Co F 27th Indiana Infantry.
Mustered Sept. 12, 1861.
Killed at Resaca, Ga., May 15, 1864.
-Indiana AG Vol 4 & 8

Reuben Hendrickson, 29, died 15 May 1864 in Resaca, Georgia. He was born 2 May 1835 in Dolan, Indiana to Joshua Hendrickson and his wife, Sarah Jane Helton and, to his family, Reuben is thought of as an unsung hero of the Civil War. Indeed, he was wounded in several major battles with Company F, Indiana Infantry only to be killed at Resaca in General Sherman's famous March to the Sea. John Campbell, Reuben's brother-in-law, fought beside him during the war and lived to tell the heroic story.

Reuben married Amelia Susan Campbell, of Ballymoney, Antrim County, Northern Ireland, daughter of Robert Campbell and his wife, Jane Cunningham, who migrated to the United States in 1843 through the Port of New Orleans. Reuben and Amelia had just enough time between battles to bring four children into the world; Robert, Joshua, John and Isabella.

It may seem unusual, but Reuben has three gravesites due to his sudden death and a lack of communication at the time. His original funeral service took place when the news first broke and it included personal artifacts along with a stone marker near his parents at Farr Cemetery in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest. His main burial consisted of another set of artifacts and a headstone which was erected at Payne Cemetery with his wife. However, his mortal remains are actually located in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, Tennessee in Grave #9142.
