Mary M. (Short) Cole, for 66 years a resident of this community, died at her home here Monday morning of penumonia. She had been ill a week.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church by Reverend Witt T. Holley, assisted by Reverend R. L. Allen, with interment in the Bloomfield Cemetery by her first husband William Henry Clay Jones, a farmer and merchant.
Mary Cole (nee Short) was born in Cape Girardeau, Nov. 8, 1856. Her father died when she was quite young. Her mother, Elizabeth Short Dabney passed on when Mary was only 17. She came to Stoddard County to make her home with her grandfather, Reverend William W. Norman, who lived northwest of Bloomfield. After nine months she was married to William Henry Clay Jones, son of Norphlet Green Hill Jones and Sarah (Christy) Jones.
They were parents of nine children, all of whom reached maturity. Seven survive: Mrs. Bertie (Berniece) Quinn of El Paso, Texas; Mrs. Irma Anderson and Fowler Crittenden Jones of Cape Girardeau; Robert Norphlet Jones of Sikeston, Missouri; Mrs Mayme Abernathy; Mrs. W. E. Elmore (Pearl) and Mrs. Edna Tiller of Bloomfield. Mrs. Lutie Goza and Otis E Jones have passed on.
Mr. Jones turned from farming to business and for many years prior to his death 46 years ago, he operated a store on the present site of the Trust Company Building. Mrs. Jones sold this building to a Mr. Graham who contiuned to operate it for some time.
On June 15, 1898, Mrs. Mary Jones was re-married to W. F. Cole, who served many years as City Collector of Bloomfield. He passed on 10-14-1909.
Mrs. Cole had continued to make her home here maintaining her own house until the end. She and her family, as they grew up, have been prominent in the life of Bloomfield. She was a long-time member of the Methodist Church.
