Bertha was b.September 13, 1860 in Louisville, Kentucky to parents Godfrey (AKA Gottfried) Henning and Barbara Mathias (her parents immigrated to the US from Germany/Prussia and France/Alsace-Lorraine, repectively). As a youngster, she was known as "Bettie." Bertha had four younger siblings: Emma H. Henning Stevenson, Mary G. Henning Walter, George J. Henning and Louisa Henning. Bertha married John Mannion in Louisville, Kentucky on January 25, 1882. Bertha worked in a papermill while living with her parents in Louisville, and this is likely how she and John met (John, John's brother Martin, and most of their sons were papermakers). Bertha and John moved to Neenah, Winnebago Co, WI, where John was a paper mill superintendent. They had seven sons: Martin D., John "Jake" Cornelius, George T., William C., Edward C., Walter E., and Godfrey "Fritz" E. In 1911, Bertha and John moved to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co. Michigan which is where John's brother Martin's family was residing as well as Bertha's and John's sons, Edward, William and Godfrey along with their families. Her husband John predeceased her in 1931. Bertha passed away away on Sunday, August 3, 1952 at Leifbroer Nursing Home. The funeral was held on Wednesday, August 6, at St. Augustine Church, and she was buried at Mt. Olivet Catholic Church in Kalamazoo.
