Chellie Hazel Alger Bruce, 90, of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Bruce was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Virginia, and was a daughter of the late Gilbert Dean and Mary Ellen (Rodgers) Dean.

She was a life member of Rileyville Church of the Brethren and Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Elkton, Va. Chellie was a people person who loved to entertain family and friends by preparing fabulous meals. She also loved to garden and travel.

On May 16, 1939, she married Rumsey L. Alger Sr., who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelby J. Buracker and son-in-law, Ralph Buracker, of Front Royal and Phyllis L. Seal and son-in-law, Robert Seal, of Luray; three sons, Jerry A. Alger and daughter-in-law, Martha Alger, of Dayton, Larry E. Alger and daughter-in-law, Theresa Alger, of Richmond and Rodgers Dean Alger of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Neva B. Comer of Stanardsville; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and first husband, Rumsey L. Alger Sr., she was preceded in death by a son, Rumsey L. Alger Jr.; three sisters, Lelia D. Bickers, Anna Roach and Wilma Deane; her second husband, R. Wallace Bruce; and great-grandson, Charles Stockner.

Dr. Rob Buchanon will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, where visitation was held Monday.

Burial will be at Alger, Ed. Cemetery in Rileyville.
