John Joseph Cotita, a native of Pensacola, FL, born July 17, 1922 passed away August 8, 2008. Living a full 86 years dedicated to his family and community. He was a Veteran of World II and Korea. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, he served 39 years at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, where he retired as Supervisor Training Specialist for the Naval Air Rework Facility. After retiring he served as a volunteer at the National Aviation Museum for several years. He was a charter member of the Pensacola Aviation Club and a charter member of the Navy Flying Club. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church, President of the St. Mary's Parish Council. He was a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus Deluna Assembly. He was a member and King of the Krewe of Columbus, American Son's of Italy, and the AFLCIO. He was the first Fire Chief of the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department and during this time he was instrumental in acquiring the land for a park, the now Brentwood Dixie Youth League Baseball Park. He mastered the art of winemaking, woodworking, gardening, and cooking. He loved listening to good instrumental music, motorcycle riding, flying planes, fishing, crabbing, sailing, boating, camping and square dancing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Gladys Violet Long Cotita; his sister, Mary Catherine Cotita Ficcocelli, and his wife, Irene Marie Kerth Cotita of fifty-five years. He is survived by his sister, Marion Cotita Barnes (Nick), his four daughters, Diana Marie Cotita (Larry) Fordham of Slidell, Louisiana, Shirley Ann Cotita of Pensacola, Sheila Bridgett Cotita (DeWayne) Arnette of Cantonment, and Serene Mary Cotita (Danny) Keiek of Milton. John has five Grandsons; two great-grandchildren. Also many wonderful nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.
