Son of John Turley and DeMercy (Everman) Crooks. Husband of Anna Farrier (married 22 March 1858 in Linn Co, OR). Father of Henrietta 'Nettie' Lucretia Crooks and Phoebe Lorinda "Linnie" Crooks. A.H. Crooks was fencing off some land (most believe illegally) in the Grizzly area with his son-in-law Stephen Jory when they were killed by Luke Langdon, who saw them on his property and reacted to their presence. The shots were heard by Garret Maupin who immediately rode to Prineville to report the crime. Wasco County Deputy Sheriff
J.L. Luckey captured Langdon, who was murdered by a band of vigilantes in Prineville after his arrest (as was an innocent man, Bill Harrison), the first incident of the Vigilante Wars of 1882-1883. Note that some believe that Crooks and Jory are actually buried at Grizzly Cemetery.
