Thomas Lebern Anderson, for 42 years a resident of Denton County and a Confederate veteran, died Friday afternoon (December 29, 1922) at 2:20 o'clock at the home of his son, M.A. Anderson, 316 Stroud St., at the age of 78 years and 24 days. He had been ill for about three months but old age was the principal cause of death. The deceased was a native of Warren County, TN, where he was born December 5, 1844.

He volunteered in the Confederate Army in July 1862 and was assigned to Gen. Pat Cleburne's brigade, Army of Tennessee. He was with Bragg in the famous retreat from Middle Tennessee across the Cumberland Mountains and into Chattanooga. He was in the battle of Chickamauga, September 19th and 20, 1963. In the latter battle he was captured and taken to the Federal prison at Rock Island, IL where he remained until Nov. 18, 1864 and reached home June 5, 1865. He became a member of the Baptist Church Sept. 27, 1865. The deceased was married July 29, 1866 to Miss Emily Hammer. To them were born five boys and three girls. They moved to Texas in 1879 and settled in Coryell County where they lived until the following year when they moved to Denton County. Mrs. Anderson died in 1906. He was married to Miss Mary Elliott May 13, 1915. She survives him.

The children surviving are: Andrew Johnson Anderson, Denton; James Isaac Anderson, Denton; Marcus Azail Anderson, Denton; Omar Gay Anderson, Greenville; William Brown Anderson, Van Zandt County; Mrs. Elizabeth Land, Denton; Mrs. Louisa Cox, Cooper Creek community; Mrs. Talitha Cumi Whoberry, Corinth. There are twenty four grandchildren and one great grandchild surviving.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Old Shiloh cemetery in the charge of Rev. B.F. Sizemore and Dr. H.G. Feming. (Compiled from stories in the Denton Record Chronicle)
