Charles Harold Rogers was born near Blue Mound, Linn Co., KS. An article in The Craig Daily Press, Craig, CO, featured an abbreviated biography of Charles and his uncle Thomas Wilkes Rogers, a pioneer Craig business man. The section relating to Charles is quoted below.
"Charles Rogers, one of Tom's nephews in Kansas, sent his Uncle Tom a graduation announcement when he graduated form high school. His Uncle Tom sent him $75.00 for a gift, and asked him to come to Craig to work for him. Charles was born on the same ranch that his uncle had lived on.
Charles decided that he would come to Craig to work for his Uncle Tom, however he became homesick and Tom sent him home for a visit. Charles returned to Craig to again work for his uncle and by fall Tom decided that Charles needed to go to college. Tom sent him to college ("Aggies") in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where he studied animal husbandry. After finishing there, Charles came back to Craig for a while and again returned to Kansas and stayed there until 1940. By that time he had married his schoolmate Thelma Stewart. They then came back to Craig and worked for Uncle Tom in his feed and milling business. Tom had bought out the Craig Farmers Mill and Elevator in 1940. Charles and Thelma lived with Uncle Tom Rogers for about a year until they found a home of their own."
Charles worked for his uncle for 15 years before being able to buy the business.
Working in the elevator and feed business was hard work and very dusty and dirty. During harvest season it meant long hours. For a time during the late 1950's and early 1960's Charles' son-in-law Royce Powell operated a Case tractor dealership out of the elevator. Feed sales seemed to be the main stay and operated year round. Both Charles and Thelma were members and were in leadership roles in the Craig Christian Church. Charles was a member of the Gideons, an organization that distributed bibles to motel rooms. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography. He set up his own dark room in the basement of their house. Another favorite past time was driving through the countryside during the summer.
From his obituary: "Tom sold the elevator to Charles Rogers in 1955. …Charles Rogers owned the feed and elevator for many years carrying on in the very best interests of his many customers and in his uncle's footsteps. He sold the business to MJK Sales Company and retired in May of 1977. He died on August 7, 1978."
