He came to Amelia County, Va. in Nov. 1901 because "he was aching for a change."
He suffered from rheumatism and thought a warmer climate might help.
Sam and wife Rachel and brother-in-law Joel Perry Layman and wife Kate Rubelman Layman, and, also Rachel's mother, Maryem Marsh Layman and Uncle Josiah ,(Si) Marsh , (Maryem Marsh Layman's, Brother) Sam and Rachel's only child, James Wellington Ashman loaded all their goods in two covered wagons and left Shiawassee County, Michigan.
It took them 2 months to arrive in Amelia County, Va. He and the family worked many hours to till the land that no one had ever farmed. The family still lives and farms on land around Grub Hill Church. They came to Virginia in late 1901 in 2 covered wagons.
This family came with the 7 people in 2 wagons. Her name was Miriam (aka Maryem) Marsh Layman along with her daughter, Rachel L. Ashman & her husband Samuel W.Ashman (my great grandparents) . Also Josiah Henry Harrison Marsh (aka Si), who is the brother to my Great great Grandmother, Miriam (aka Maryem) Marsh Layman. Josiah Marsh was an artist, musician and a fortune teller. I have the original written diary of their travels from Shiawassee, Mi. to Amelia, Va.
I believe the 1900 date does appear in the Historical Notes of Amelia County at our Amelia County Historical Society, but that is incorrect.
Samuel W. Ashman is remembered fondly by his last surviving grandaughter,
as Dad as he was called, by Lily Mae Ashman Byrd as a sweet, stern, jolly grandfather,he often gave the grands a small coin, saying "Don't spend it now"
