James Wellington Ashman & his twin brother, John George born in England ca 1817 came to America , the exact year is not known, may be 1834. John George was a stowaway on the ship, he actually hid during passage. James W. paid for his passage or worked on the ship for passage. They may have landed in N.Y., since they both married in N.Y. They both worked on the Erie Canal as they were ditcher's by trade in England & James became a Captain on a canal boat on the Erie Canal. During the winter when the Canal was frozen he became a logger. Neither brother could read or write. James W. Ashman was blind in one eye. James married Margaret "Maggie" Miller in NY, both her parents were born in France, no first names given in the oral history. James moved to Michigan about ca 1860 , and was a farmer on 1870 Census, Township of Waterford, County of Oakland, Michigan. John George married Martha Fuller Scott in Brockport ,Monroe County, N.Y.ca 1862. They moved to Chula, Livingston, Missouri. The brother's lost contact of each other. About 1915 the Missouri & Chula, Va. Ashman extended family by then , received mail in Chula, Missouri that was intended for Chula, Va. Ashman kin(now known as Amelia, Va. ) & they were finally in contact again.
