Edyth Jenkins Romney, 88, passed away peacefully at home in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 3, 1995 surrounded by loved ones.
She was born April 14, 1906 in Freedom, Wyoming, a daughter of William Evan and Lena Weber Jenkins. She attended Star Valley High School graduating as valedictorian. She graduated from Utah State Agricultural college and taught elementary school in Moore, Idaho, Fairview and Freedom, Wyoming. She was a devoted and active member of the LDS Church all of her life serving two full-time missions in the Canadian and Central States Missions. She served as Relief Society President three times, was a teacher and organist in the Sunday School and Relief Society organizations. She frequently said, 'If it wasn't for the gospel, life would be nothing.' She married Hans Eli Hansen on July 20, 1938 in the Manti Temple. They lived in Central, Idaho. He passed away on September 25, 1945. She married Thomas Cottam Romney in the Salt Lake Temple on October 6, 1947 and he passed away on January 11, 1962. She has provided thousands of hours of Christ-like volunteer service. She provided 43 years of service in the Church Historical Department - for a short period as an employee and most of the time as a volunteer. She typed more than 80,000 pages of historical manuscript material from hard-to-read handwritten manuscripts of early church leaders. She received special citation from the LDS Church Historical Department and the Mormon History Association for her singular contribution of preserving vital historical data and facilitating historical research. She served as a volunteer at LDS Hospital for over 27 years, was a volunteer at the Museum of Church History and Art, the Utah Symphony and read for the blind. She always said, 'Service is the best thing in life and has blessed me in many ways.' She lived and served others, including those of her own family, with a cheerful and quiet dignity. She was a positive influence in the lives of many.
She is survived by: four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Myra Jenkins of Salt Lake City; Norma Campbell of Naf, Idaho; Conn and Elmina Haderlie of Logan, Utah; Milo and June Bosshardt of Redmond, Utah; a sister-in-law, Wilma Hale of Afton, Wyoming; step-children and spouses, LeOra (Ora) Jenkins, Newton, Utah; Pauline (Vernon) Thomander, SLC; Lucille (Jay Edward) Painter, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Miles C. (Vanda) Romney, Redmond, Wash.; Genevieve (Heber) Moulton, Bountiful, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Charles Evan Jenkins, a sister, Alice Hamilton and step-children Virgil Hansen, Ethel Gunnell, Owen T. Romney, Golden Romney, Lydia Romney and Catherine White.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 7, 1995 at 10 am in the 13th Ward (375 E. !00 S. - SLC) with Bishop Don Smith officiating. Friends may call Monday, February 6 from 6-8 pm at the Russon Brothers Mortuary (255 S. 200 E. - SLC) and at the church Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment: Freedom, Wyoming.
