Note:

The obituary for Anna Eliza Pollock Cowan that was originally published in the Republican in Clarkston, Wash. and reprinted in the Fairfield Ledger (Fairfield, Iowa) gave the DOB as 1840. The caption for her headstone photo uses 1842 for the DOB, which evidently was put on the inscripton on the monument for Anna E Cowan. Not sure how to reconcile the differences. Will use the 1842 DOB year found on the headstone for this memorial, but with the caution that the obituary says 1840. Clarification with census reports or other sources is clearly needed.

--------
Married Cornelius T Cowan on November 22, 1860 in Jefferson county, Iowa. The original marriage document has been viewed by this contributor in the Recorder's office at the Jefferson county courthouse. The first name used is written in cursive and appears to be "Ann", but the way that it is written it could have also meant the "Anna" that her name is generally known as. Will put "Ann" in as her nickname just because that is, more or less, the name that was written down for her on her marriage record #1976.

--------
Update: At Fell cemetery in Jefferson county are buried Anna's parents and other Pollock family members. A memorial inscription for "Ann Eliza Pollock" Cowan is on one of the monuments, which led to an inadvertent memorial for her to be made at Fell cemetery (# 17372860) in 2007 by a K. Bonnett, who has Pollock family in her own lineage. Both memorials are being kept in place through mutual agreement; this one for the physical burial, the other one for the memorial inscription.

Father: Thomas Davis Pollock

Mother: Jane Allen Pollock

Thomas and Jane Pollock are buried in Fell Cemetery, near Libertyville, Jefferson county, Iowa. At least four young children of Cornelius and Anna Cowan are buried nearby: Cornelius T Cowan, Georgeanna, Bessie, and Grace.

---------
Anna's obituary said that she was the mother of eight children (five sons and three daughters). Evidently excluding (or at most including two of the children at Fell cemetery) there are obviously several children who grew to be adults who are not accounted for at this time. A "Mansfield/Battles" family tree on Ancestry.com has several children listed - they need to be verified and where possible memorials made for them in the appropriate cemetery at least as far as FindAGrave is concerned. The total number of children born to Cornelius and Anna Cowan may be as high as 11.

Based partly on the "Mansfield/Battles" family tree on Ancestry.com and the associated census and other materials that are attached to that tree, the children of Cornelius and Anna Cowan are (tentatively):

William A Cowan, (1862 - ????)
Georgeanna Cowan, (1865-1866)
Lenora "Nora" Elinor Cowan Seehorn, (1867-1945)*
Ina Mae Cowan Walsh, (1868-1951)
Ira Orr Cowan, (1870 - 1897)
Thomas Pollock Cowan, (1874 - 1919)
Cornelius T Cowan, (1875-1878)
Scott Allen Cowan, (1877 - ????)
Bessie Cowan, (1879-1879)
Grace Cowan, (1879?-1879)
Christian Paul Cowan, (1881-1959)

*The California Death Index for Nora Elinor Cowan Seehorn ( Lenora Cowan Seehorn ) has her DOB as May 2, 1867 and DOD as Jan. 28, 1945. Her headstone, however, has "1869-1945) engraved. There are more census and the death records that use 1867 for the DOB year, but the memorial for her on FindAGrave uses the 1869 DOB as that is what is on the headstone. Not sure how to resolve that discrepancy (headstone engraved wrong??)

-------
Note: The obituary for Anna Cowan referred to her husband as "Capt. C.T. Cowan". A preliminary military record search does not find that Cornelius was actually a captain in the army at the time he was discharged. It is possible that the term "Capt." was a family nickname, or an error in the obituary itself. Perhaps someone will be able to clarify if "Capt." was for a real military rank or otherwise.

Gravesite Details

The obituary did not state a specific DOD; at this point October 1904 is the best this contributor can use. Clarification would be appreciated.
