Mr. John Roger Akins
Warden

Mr. John Roger Akins, age 63, died Tuesday at his residence under the care of Vista Care Hospice. He was a native and life-long resident of Bulloch County. Mr. Akins graduated from Statesboro High School in 1956 and attended the University of Georgia. He was a dairyman for many years before going to work with the Bulloch County Correctional Institute 20 years ago. He served as warden for 16 of his 20 years of service to Bulloch County. He was an honorary member of the Sinkhole Hunting Club, Thompson's Pasture Hunting Club, Silver Spur Riding Club, Peace Officer's Association, Prison Warden's Association and the Dairymen's Association. He received recognition for his 20 years of service to Bulloch County. Mr. Akins served in the Army National Guard and attended the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa Lanier Akins of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie T. and Stephen Cannady of Charlotte, N.C. and Donna L. and Skeebo Moore of Statesboro; three grandchildren, Megan Marie Moore and James Preston Moore, both of Statesboro, and Jordan Ashley Cannady of Charlotte, N.C.; his parents, John L. and Anna Ruth Cason Akins of Statesboro; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl O. and Jean Akins, James E. "Jimmy" and Nancy Akins, all of Statesboro, and Elder William A. and Janis Akins of Vadalia; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church with Elder John Scott officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service.

Burial will be in the Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church in Candler County.

Pallbearers will be Craig Lanier, Jim Akins, Jason Akins, Carl Akins Jr., Clint Akins, Ricky Lanier, Paul Bennett and Brian Wood.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bulloch County Public Safety, the Sinhole Hunting Club and Thomson's Pasture Hunting Club.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Bulloch County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2027, Sttesboro 30459; or to Vista Care Hospice, 105 Wheeler Court, Suite 101, Savannah 31405.
