Christian August Frank, aged 77 years, died this morning at 6 o'clock at the Frank residence, 210 Horner Street, Seventh Ward [Johnstown], after a short illness of paralysis. He had not been enjoying good health for some time, but was able to be about until 9 o'clock Saturday night, when he was taken suddenly ill after his return from a visit to a store in that neighborhood. The funeral will likely take place on Wednesday or Thursday from the Frank residence [funeral took place on Thursday, October 8th], the services to be conducted by the Rev. Carl Stolz, pastor of St. Paul's German Lutheran Church, with burial in Grandview Cemetery [Cambria County, Pa.].

The deceased was born at Weinsberg, Germany, June 15, 1837, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Frank, who came to America early in the 50's [actual year was 1847] and located in this county [Cambria]. They first settled in Johnstown and later removed to Mineral Point, locating on a farm just west of that village. Part of the Frank farm is now the property of the Southern Cambria Railway whose power house is located near where the Frank homestead stood. Both Mr. and Mrs. Charles Frank died near Mineral Point and later the estate was sold to the Cambria Iron Company. Christian A. Frank began work during his boyhood days for the Cambria Iron Company. He was employed for some years in the pattern shop with the late Evan Lewis, later going to Braddock [a town near Pittsburgh], with John Hinderer in 1873. After working for the Carnegie Steel Company for several years, Mr. Frank returned to Johnstown and became one of the first employees of the Johnson Company. He remained with this concern until ten years ago, when he retired, but shortly thereafter he returned to the Cambria Steel Company and worked in the pattern shop until three years ago.

C. A. Frank was one of a family of five children and is the second of the number to pass away. His brother, Charles F. Frank, a former resident of Johnstown, died two years ago at Crestline, Ohio, where he had resided for a period of over 50 years. His surviving brother is Adolph Frank, of near Salix [located in Cambria County], and his sisters are Mrs. Emma Ginter, of the Seventeenth Ward [Johnstown], and Mrs. Charles Schmauder, of Altoona. The deceased was married twice, both times in this city. His first wife was Miss Sarah A. Peake [born in Little Wenlock, Shropshire, England], to whom he was married in July 1868, by the Rev. Reuben A. Fink, of the First Lutheran Church. Three children were born to this union—Herbert Frank of Altoona, and William Frank, of McKeesport, and Miss Sarah Frank, who died in Johnstown in 1876. Mrs. Sarah Frank died in [December] 1875 and later he married Mrs. Caroline H. [Hager] Meyer, who survives him. They were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Hager [Caroline's brother] on Iron Street, Millville Borough, by the Rev. R. Veith, pastor of the German Lutheran Church. Mr. Frank was the stepfather of Charles H. Meyer, Secretary of the Johnstown School Board.

Many years ago the deceased was active in politics in Woodvale Borough, along with the venerable John Hinderer, now one of Braddock's oldest residents, and served for a long time as assessor of that borough. He was one of the oldest members of Zion's German Lutheran Church and was identified with Cambria Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
