One of six children, Sarah V. Spangler was born in Alabama to John Spangler (1830-1862) and Susannah Hensley (b1835) of Scott County, Virginia. The Spangler family left Virginia for Alabama in 1853. After Sarah's father died in 1862, her mother Susannah moved the family north to Indiana, where Susannah's brother Isaac Hensley lived.

Sarah met and married Samuel B. Franklin (1854-1909) in Fayette Co. Indiana, and they married in 1871. He was the son of David Franklin (1825-1898) and Malinda Meeks (1827-1865). Ten children were born to Samuel and Sarah before she died in 1893. Children are: Bertha, b1872; Flora, b1874; Mary, b1876; Charles William, b1878; Anna Pearl, b1878; Nellie, b1882; Rose, b1886; Elmer, b1890; Otto, b1892; and Elmira, b1893.

Sarah died in Abbott, Washington County, Colorado in Nov of 1893. Her last child Elmira, lived to be only 9 days old, and Sarah's death came 14 days later. Husband Samuel remained in Colorado for 15 more years, then moved to Washington State to be near his son Charles. Samuel died in Ferndale, Washington in 1909 and is buried in the Enterprise Cemetery.

Sarah and her three children are buried in the Thurman cemetery. They are believed to be in Row D, on the south end, toward space 15.

Another daughter, Nellie Jane, was born 21 July 1882. She married John Dwight Evert in 1903 in Colorado. By 1910, Nellie and John reside in Denver, and they had at least two children, but both had died. Two more children were born in 1915 and 1916 in Wyoming. Nellie may have died by 1917, as John lists his second wife Emma as the nearest relative on his WWI draft registration card. Did Nellie die in Wyoming, or did they divorce?
