Nathan Welch lived in Woodson County, KS and enlisted in the 15th KS Cavalry according to the National Archives.

Woodson and Wilson counties are mixed up in the history books. Nathan along with his siblings, his mother Philadelphia and father Peter Nathaniel Welch were the first permanent homesteaders in Wilson county. This is documented also in the frontier history book written by Lester A. Harding.
