Was of russian jewish descent. In 1926. William Black opens his first nut roasting shop, "Chock full o'Nuts" on Broadway and 43rd, NYC. By 1932, after the Great Depression, fancy nuts are a luxury, William Black switches from roasting nuts to roasting coffee beans, and the New York Roasted coffee shops are born.
