My mother-in-law has told me many loving stories of her little sister Patty, whom she dearly loved. Patty was the youngest of 5 sisters (Margaret Lusher, Lois Britt, Edith Aldridge and Elizabeth Harvill-my mother in law) and 1 brother, Harold, and was as sweet and kind as she was pretty. She fell madly in love with Eugene Pace, married and had had two darling daughters which she adored. Her short life was a good one. The following was copied from the Charleston, S.C. Post and Courier:
A North Charleston family of four persons was wiped out in a collision involving a southbound truck and trailer and four northbound automobiles on Highway 15, six miles north of Walterboro late Friday night. Seventeen persons were involved in the crash. Of these, three besides the child who died after the wreck, were hospitalized, one with serious injuries. Killed in the accident were Crawford Eugene Pace, 23, of North Charleston; his wife, Patricia Ann Donnally Pace and their four month old daughter, Patricia Ann. Another daughter, 17 month old Laura Ellen died early Saturday in the Colleton County Hospital.
Highway Patrol Cpl. G.C. Riddle, who was following the line of cars when the accident occurred gave the following account: William David Ray, 32, of Jacksonville, Florida apparently veered across the center line of the highway and struck a northbound Buick driven by Woodrow Britt, then striking a Ford stock car which Britt was towing. After striking the first two cars, the truck crashed head-on into an Oldsmobile driven by Crawford Eugene Pace. The truck then went over to the other side of the road and into a ditch and caught fire. As the truck headed for the ditch, another Oldsmobile struck it. The truck, which was loaded with rosin was extinguished by Walterboro firemen before it reached the highly flammable cargo.
Mrs. Pace and Mrs. Britt were sisters. Mrs. Britt, and expectant mother, collapsed when she was told her sister had been killed. Cpl. Benton said it was a "miracle" that none of the passengers in the Britt car were seriously injured.
