Hazel Ellen (Clinghan) Donnally was my mother-in-law's mother. From the family stories told, she was a strong, determined and diciplined lady. She married Greenleaf Whittier Donnally on June 11, 1924 in Concho, West Virginia. To this union was born 1 son, 5 daughters, and 2 stillborn babies. Her 6 children all called her "Mother", and were careful to follow her direction. She was a hard working woman who could work the land better than most men. She was also known to keep an immaculate home for her family, and made sure all her children were spic and span clean, and their clothes (most of which were hand-me-downs) neat as a pin. Of all the pictures I've seen of her, she never had much of a smile on her face, making me wonder what was on her mind or in her heart. My mother-in-law told me that the day her Mother died, she said she wasn't feeling well and went in to lay down on her bed for a spell. This being unusual, my mother-in-law followed her in and recalls her Mother sighing one deep breath, closing her eyes and she was gone. The following was copied from the Charleston Post and Courier:

Mrs. Hazel Ellen (Clinghan) Donnally, wife of Greenleaf Whittier Donnally of Orangeburg Avenue, Charleston Heights died at her home on July 12, 1956. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on July 14 at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. W.B. Welch officiating. Burial will be in Charleston, West Virginia in the Clingham family plot. NOTE: Hazel's body was eventually moved from West Virginia to South Carolina to be laid to rest by the side of her husband "where she belonged".

Mrs. Donnally was born in Prince, West Virginia, a daughter of Elijah C. Clinghan and Mrs. Georgia E. Sexton Clinghan. Her siblings include: Pearl, Carrie, Bertie, Gladys, Dola and Irene. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are: her husband, Greenleaf Whittier Donnally; five daughters, Mrs. Margaret Hughes, Mrs. Lois Britt, Mrs. Edith Aldridge, Mrs. Elizabeth Harvill and Mrs. Patricia Pace.
