Janet,

I don't imagine Mike knew any more than anyone else. Original at the time birth certificates unless the writing is really good, can even cause problems. Those fixed later from Bible records or family memories can also be wrong.

His Social Security information does not help.

6. It's Murel in Rachel's obit.
7. It's only George and Leah in son Mike's obit.
8. It's Murl and Rachel in daughter Murlene's obit.
9. It's George Murel Brooks on their marriage record. I've added the certificate to both their memorials. Rachels' obit has them married in the wrong place.

Census records are often wrong.

I don't find him in the 1940 census.

I didn't find any military information on FamilySearch.org. He may be in newspaper draft listings of the time.

The FamilySearch.org site has changed and I've been unable to find what you've quoted.
I've known Murel, Rachel, Claude, Marie, and others of both families for as long as I can remember. I'll admit not well, and not ever being concerned about how names were spelled.
There are also more ways to spell it. Murle is a spelling variant of the Dutch, English, and German Merle.

This still doesn't prove or disprove anything, because even family bible spellings can be changed. People added and changed names as they pleased, and without doing it legally. They also pronounced them wrong, often causing them to get spelled wrong.

There isn't a record of any kind that can't possibly have errors. It might help to know who gave the information, in each case, but even someone who should know, often didn't or they didn't remember correctly at the time.

If I was guessing, I'd choose Murrell from Claude's obit. However, since it's used more often, even though I don't know who actually wrote it, I'm going to stay with Murel.

Thank you for your information.

Orlena Marie.
