George Rettig Henry was born in Milam County, Texas. He farmed, and also worked at Phillips cotton gin. About 1920 he moved with his parents to Norton, Runnels County, Texas. He met and married a young red-headed school teacher named Willie Ruth Jennings, and they had one daughter and one son. After several years of cotton farming, George worked at a cotton gin, then at the cotton yard in Norton (owned by Ruth's father, Jerry Jennings). George later drove a school bus for Norton School system, picking up and delivering students, as well as driving to and from out-of-town football games. In 1946 George, Ruth and their son moved to Rockdale. George did carpenter work and odd jobs until his health failed. George and Ruth celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1974 with many relatives and friends attending. George was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, north of Rockdale. George was a resident at Boswell Nursing Home in Rockdale at the time of his death. from a memorial written by his daughter
