The Monroe Watchman gives the following account of the death of Mrs Cook:
The world lost one of its greatest treasures and blessings, a good mother, in the death of Mrs Julia Ann Cook, wife of Mr John H Cook, who passed to the realms of bliss at 2 o'clock last Sunday morning, May 29, 1910, at the home of her son, Mr Walter J Cook, near Centennial, Monroe county. Mrs Cook was taken ill of some stomach trouble on May 22, but no alarm was felt until the next night when she began to grow worse and continued to sink until the following Sunday morning when death relieved her of all pain. She retained consciousness until Saturday morning and was able to recognize all her children except Dr Wm E Cook who did not reach her bedside until Saturday evening. Mrs Cook was a Miss Baker before her marriage, and nearly all of her life was spent in Monroe county. Her age at the time of her death was 75 years, 4 months and 20 days. Some 48 years ago she united with the Baptist church under the leadership of Revs Theodore Given, John Bragg and Martin Bibb and faithfully kept her vows to her God and her Church to the end. Her life of noble deeds and labors of love stands as a monument to the beauty of her character. For nearly half a century of married life she kept a vigilant watch over her home, and a better wife and mother never adorned a household. As a neighbor and friend she was kindness and loyalty personified. It was but natural that her children should rise up and call her blessed, and her joy was great in the manifestations of their affection in her closing hours when all so tenderly exemplified obedience to the divine injunction, "Honor thy father and thy mother." To the venerable and fond husband parted by the hand of death from his devoted wife all hearts go out, and their sympathies also include the bereaved children, Messrs Walter Johnson of this county, Randolph Gray of Middlebrook, Va, Rev John Floyd of Guyandotte, W Va, Dr William Edward Cook of Algoma, W Va, and Mrs Lee Walker of Hinton.
