Civil War Veteran

When he was 16 he joined Co G, 88th Pennsylvania Infantry as a drummer. He was soon discharged for sickness. (His father, Lt Col Joseph A. McLean, commanded the 88th Pennsylvania Infantry during Daniel's service in that regiment. LT Col McLean was subsequently killed in action at 2nd Battle of Manassas.) In 1863, Daniel joined with Capt. Wm. D. Smith's company as a musician with the 42nd Pennsylvania Militia Infantry. After the campaign, he was discharged. He joined again in Jul 1864 with Co. A, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and this time he carried a gun instead of drum.
