Soon after she was born, the family moved to Glenboro, Manitoba where her father had a farm. In 1902, when she was 16 years old, her family moved again, this time to Blaine, Whatcom, Washington. Her father purchased 5 acres of land located where Dakota Creek empties into the Ocean.
The family had a few cows and chickens and lots of blackberries. Sigurdur also raised pigs. Lena moved to Edison, Skagit, Washington in about 1905 on the advice of her friend Emma Laxdal. She worked for George Halloran, a druggist, taking care of his son and his dog; she became good friends with his wife. In Edison she met Ernest Hake and on June 14, 1907 the two of them eloped by train to Seattle where they were married by a Justice of the Peace, with strangers as witnesses.
Lena and Ernie had 6 children and raised their family in Toppenish, Yakima, Washington. They moved to Salem, Oregon in their 80s to be nearer family. Their children are listed on Ernie's memorial page.
