During World War II Harold worked for Bechtel in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada on the ALCAN Highway. After completing that contract, he worked for the US Army as a civilian employee on the island of Amchitka in Alaska's Aleutian Islands. Amchitka was being prepared as a staging area for the invasion of Japan.
Harold married Barbara Ann Russell on May 29, 1946, in Toppenish. She was a daughter of Everett and Elizabeth (Mathers) Russell and was also born in Toppenish. Harold and Barbara had three children: Charles Russell, Janet Louise and Harald Trygve.
The family moved to Portland in 1950 where Harold was employed by the city of Portland and later by Eoff Electric. In 1955 he went to work for Midstate Electric Cooperative in La Pine and in 1959 Harold took a position with Tillamook PUD as the Dispatcher/Bookkeeper. He remained at the PUD until his retirement as Assistant Superintendent in 1986 at the age of 69.
Harold and Barbara spent their retirement years in the Portland area.
