Valentine Barkhimer, 80, 2312 Maple, who was known both as Val or Bun Barkhimer, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the Columbus Convalescent center. He had been in failing health for the past two years and seriously ill for the past eight weeks.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Reed and Jewell funeral home by the Rev. Calvin Brandenburg. Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery.
Persons may call at the funeral home from 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A native of Brown county, Barkhimer was born Sept. 27, 1894, to Phillip and Lydia Settle Barkhimer. He was first married to Opal Cunningham, and she died in 1925. He later married May Kinsey and she died July 26, 1973.
Barkhimer was a Bartholomew county resident most of his life and retired in 1959 as a supervisor at Reeves Pulley where he had been employed since May 17, 1926. He had worked as a machinist, night shift foreman and night shift superintendent. he was a member of Sandy Hook United Methodist church.
Survivors include a son, Robert Barkhimer, and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Hash, both of Indianapolis; a stepson, Eugene Settle, 2910 Taylor road; two half-brothers, Homer Barkes, 3322 McCullough, and Lovell Barkes, 4451 Roosevelt; a sister, Anna Sprague, Hope; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Barkhimer was preceded in death by a half-brother, Omer Barkes; two brothers, Elmer and John Barkhimer; and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Dudley.
