"Tornado tears across Champaign and Vermilion counties, Illinois, and Warren county, Indiana, 17 Apr 1922.

In its aftermath, the Anthony Gritton Family was torn apart. According to newspaper accounts, nearly all of the residents of Hedrick, Indiana were outside of buildings when the tornado hit. Ruth was torn from her mother's arms and killed along with her brother Paul. Ivan lived long enough to make it to Lakeview hospital before dying. His parents, Anthony and Bessie, and older brother Harlan and younger sister Helen survived their wounds. The funeral was held two days after the tornados.

Anthony Gritton's sister, Mrs. Otto Lange (three daughters too) from Scribner, Neb along with her brother-in-law Everett Lange arrived in time for the funeral. As well, Arthur Gritton and family, of Buffalo, N.Y. The funerals were held at the home of Arnet Byers home, three miles east of Hedrick. The bodies were interred in the West Lebanon Cemetery."
