Leora L. Birch, 72, Decatur, passed away at 9:30 AM, Thursday (March 23, 2006) after a long battle with cancer.
Leora was the 8th child of Anthony (Tony) Gritton and Bessie Ann Heck Gritton, born February 7, 1934 in Decatur. Leora married W. Fred Birch on February 12, 1953.
Leora was a Richland Community College graduate and was a member of Central Christian Church. Leora worked at Schnepp & Associates as a wholesale health and beauty aids buyer for 15 years. She then was employed as the gift department manager for North True Value Hardware for 18 years. She ended her employment history as the chief deputy assessor for the Decatur Township Assessor's office.
She was a past member of the Macon County Heart Association. She was a past president and member of the Macon County Republican Women. She was a past president and member of the Near Westside Restoration and Preservation Society (NWRAPS). She especially enjoyed the annual Heritage and Holly event, which she chaired in November 2005, even though she was challenged with her illness.
Leora is survived by her husband of 53 years; five sons, a daughter, many, many grandchildren, a sister and a brother-in-law. She leaves a vast number of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She joins her parents, brother George (Harlan), sister Edna Wells, sister Helen James, and three young siblings, Paul, Ivan and Ruth, who died when a tornado struck their farm home near West Lebanon, Indiana in 1922.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. A great sense of humor helped her through many difficulties throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. She would like to thank the following doctors and their staffs for the compassionate care she received: Dr. Richard Fritz, Dr. Benjamin Esparaz, and Dr. Mohammed Hasnain. Thanks also to the nursing staff in the oncology wing at Decatur Memorial Hospital who lovingly cared for Leora and her family these last few months.
Visitation was from 4 - 8 P.M. Sunday, March 26 at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home. Services were 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 27 at the funeral home. Burial followed at Mt. Gilead Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). Donations may be made online at www.multiplemyeloma.org.

The original obituary was written by family members, printed in the Decatur Herald and edited (condensed) by me from www.newspapers.com.
