According to the 1912 Lake County IL History, "he was graduated from Syracuse University, of which his father was president, in 1877. He was graduated from the Medical School of the same university in 1880. In 1881-82 he was surgeon in the service of the Pacific Mail S.S. Line, running on the west coast of North and South America, and then between the United States and China. He came to Lake Forest in 1882 and has since then built up a large practice.

He was married to Kate Wing Dickinson Haven on Sept 17, 1884. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Medicine, a member of the Amer Medial Association, the IL State Medical Society, the Lake County Medical Society. He is consulting surgeon for the Chicago & NWestern R.R. and for the Chicago & Milwaukee Electric R.R. and president of the Lake Forest Board of Health and of the Lake Forest Hospital Board.

He is a keen golfer, and his home is adorned with many golf trophies. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest and has been for many years clerk of its session." p. 510.
