Frances Haven Moss' late father had been chancellor of University of Michigan, Northwestern University and Syracuse University. Her husband, the late Prof. Charles M. Moss, had been an instructor of Greek at Illinois State Normal University and later the head of the Classics Department at University of Illinois.
Frances was in the first class of women to attend Northwestern University, but she later transferred to Syracuse University when her father became the president of the university. While at Syracuse, she joined with three other women and founded Gamma Phi Beta Sorority in 1874 - now an international sorority with almost 200,000 members and over 180 chapters. She is one of four Founders of an organization which is one of the ten oldest women's organizations in North America.
