Frances was in the first class of women to attend Northwestern University, but she later transferred to Syracuse University when her father became the president of the university. While at Syracuse, she joined with three other women and founded Gamma Phi Beta Sorority in 1874 - now an international sorority with almost 200,000 members and over 180 chapters. She is one of four Founders of an organization which is one of the ten oldest women's organizations in North America.
