SILAS T. BARTON

Silas T. Barton, former Wallowa County resident, died at the Smith Nursing Home in Walla Walla Dec. 7, 1981.

The son of Elija [sic] and Sara Barton, he was born Sept. 10, 1895 at Fayetteville, W.VA.

He moved to Wallowa County in 1910 and worked as a logger for many years before moving to Walla Walla in 1960. In Walla Walla he was a maintenance man at St. Mary's Community Hospital and later groundskeeper at the Memorial golf course.

Mr. Barton was a veteran of World War I, having served for nine months at Camp Lewis and in France with the Quartermaster Corps. He was inducted into the Army on April 26, 1918, at Enterprise.

He was married to LaVida Lortie of Enterprise on Jan. 31, 1920.

Survivors include his wife LaVida of Walla Walla; daughters Elvira Simms of Lebanon, Vera Roop of Walla Walla, Shirley Coffee [sic] of Hood River and Clarice Keisecker of Troy; sons Arnold of Cascade Locks, Virgil of La Grande, Russell of Carson, Wash., and Emmett of Colorado Springs, Colo., brother John of Enterprise, sisters Lula Carper of Lostine and Lala Ross of Ashland; 40 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A daughter Eilene [sic], a brother Jim and a sister Mary Trump preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be today (Thurs., Dec. 10) at 1 p.m. at the Lostine Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Lewis Frees will officiate. Interment will be in the Lostine Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being made by Herring Funeral Home in Walla Walla.
