Lulie May's parents are Elijah Madison (Lige) Barton and Sarah Alberta (Bertie) Lyon. Her known siblings are Silas Tazwell, Mary Lee, James Thomas (Jim) Olive Lala and John Booker Barton.

She married Walter Ashley Carper, January 11, 1911 in Wallowa County, Oregon. Their known children are Edna, Mary, Sadie, Joe, James Russell Lowell, Bertie, Orville, Elsie, Leona, Shirley and Robert Carper.

"Lula May Carper passed away at the Wallowa County Nursing Home in Enterprise on January 21, 1984. She was born Feb. 11, 1894 at Fayette County, West Va., daughter of Elijah M. and Sarah A. Lyon Barton.

On January 11, 1911 she was married to Walter Ashley Carper at Grossman, Ore. Her husband preceded her in death on July 19, 1942.

She was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of the Lostine Rebekah and Carnation Rebekah Lodges.

Lula came to Oregon on the train with her parents, two sisters and three brothers. From LaGrande they came by horse and wagon, camping on the Minam River. She grew up in the Grossman area and married Walter A. Carper who was the first of the Carpers to come to Oregon.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph E. Carper, Anderson, Calif., Orville J. Carper, Kinder, La., and Robert E. Carper of Joseph; seven daughters, Edna McAviney of Colville, Wash., Mary Patterson of Portland, Sadie Lyon of LaGrande, Bertie Prince of Wallowa, Elsie Stroope of Hobbs, New Mexico, Leona Collins of Wallowa, and Shirley Doud of Lostine; and a brother, John B. Barton, of the Wallowa County Nursing Home in Enterprise.

Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Lostine at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 with Pastor Lewis Frees officiating. Music will be furnished by Ronald Thompson playing the guitar, Ella McArtor and Sue Smyth, vocalists, and Louise Crow playing the organ.

Pallbearers will be Terry Collins, Leslie Collins, Brian Carper, Ronald Carper, Gale Prince and Lowell Prince."
