of a car which struck and Instantly
killed Lowell Gotham, 37, of Herman directing traffic at a highway construction job near Benson Mine

BENSON MINES LOWELL GOTHAM, 37 VICTIM
OF FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
ON WANAKEN AND BENSON
MINES ROAD YESTERDAY -SARANAC MAN DRIVER Of car.

Russell--Lowell Gotham, 37, of Marshville, New York, was
instantly killed yesterday morning about 7:00
O'clock when struck by a car driven
by G. L. Starke of Saranac Lake
while at work as flagman on the
Wanakena road construction job
about one mile from Benson mines.
Workmen were engaged in shifting a heavy steam shovel from the highway into an adjacent gravel site.
and Gotham was standing in the road between the shovel and the road truck parked opposite when the accident occured.
The impact hurled him headlong and his body was dragged some 20 feet, both legs and arms were fractured, back and neck broken and a deep hole opened in his forehead. He died almost instantly. An ambulance was rushed to the scene from Russell. Dr harry Stein of Newton Falls in attendance. Coroner Allen of Richville held an inquest when it was found that Gotham was beyond medical aid. His body was taken to Marshville for interment. He is survived by his widow and three children.
State troopers from Canton and Gouverneur investigated. Starke who claimed to have been traveling at a rate of only 35 miles per hour when the fatal accident occured, was released, after being deprived of his chauffeur's license for later action.

Saranac Laker Sued for Auto Death.

George L. Starks, wholesale hardware merchant of Saranac Lake Village, has been served with notice of $50,000 damage suit to be filed against him for having fatally injured Lowell Gotham with his automobile at Star Lake last June. The suit is brought by Mrs. Marjorie Gotham widow of the victim of the accident and Albert S Loucks as administrators of the estate of the deceased attorneys for the administrators are Cobb, Casgrove, Hartell and Wright of Watertown. The action is to be brought in the supreme court of St. Lawrence County the coroners inquest into the accident which resulted in the death of Mr. Gotham failed to show any culpable negligence on the part of Mr. Starks.
