Anderson Alexander Arnold was born on January 20, 1805 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina to William Henry Arnold and Mary Ann Polly Brown. He came to Gwinnett County Georgia at an early age with his family. Anderson's father, William was veteran of the War of 1812.
Anderson married Sarah Devaney Cain in 1836 and they raised four children. Like so many others during that time, the Arnold family was engaged in farming.
