1934-2008
Matthew (Chris) Harden, age 73, was born November 2, 1934 in Killen, AL, to the late Dave and Lucy Harden. He went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2008.
Chris left home at the age of 18 to join the United Stated Navy and retired after 21 years as a Chief Petty Officer. In 1973, he joined the Military Sealift Command as a Chief Steward. He retired after 26 years. While stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL, he met and married Gladys Pierce Walker in 1973.
His memory lives on through his loving and devoted wife of almost 30 years, Gladys Pierce Harden; son, David (Nicole) Harden of Atlanta, GA; step-daughter, Valerie Walker; four grandchildren, Corey Harden, Shanice Harden, David Harden, and Danielle Harden all of Atlanta, GA; sister, Carolyn (Frank) Eastland, of Florence, AL; nieces, Dedra (Don) Pennington of Birmingham, AL; Shirley (Clyde) Sanderfer of Chattanooga, TN; Gilda Kennedy of Columbia, SC; Brenda (Greg) Wiggins of Tulsa, OK; nephews, Washington (Teresa) Harden and Lindsey (Brenda) Eastland, both of Florence, AL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a very loving husband, father, and friend. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed. The family would like to give a special thanks to the intensive care unit staff and the general staff of the Pensacola Naval Hospital.
Funeral Services will be May 8, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. at the Heirs of the Kingdom Church at 6300 N. Davis Highway. Burial will be at the Barrancas National Cemetary with full military honors. Viewing will be Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Joe Morris & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
