Dorothy H. Pickett, 86 years old, passed away on May 21, 2021. Born and raised in New York City, the daughter of Edward and Catherine Hanley became a wonderful mother, not only for her own children but also for her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dorothy loved to try new things, with curiosity and genuine interest in all aspects of life. She especially liked meeting and talking to new people, and easily made many friends.

She also took great pride in her work and enjoyed a wide variety of jobs. As a young lady in 1950's New York City, she started out as a soda jerk in an ice cream shop and served as a telephone switchboard operator. She loved the adventures of city life, from riding the subway to eating hot dogs on the sidewalk.

Dorothy met her husband John at a clam bake in Vermont, and together they set off on their greatest adventure yet- running a dairy farm and raising kids in good clean dirt and fresh air. Later, she became a proud Navy wife and continued to enjoy interesting work throughout her life. The U.S. Navy brought John and Dorothy to Norfolk, VA, where they retired and had many other adventures during their 58 years of marriage.

In addition to her parents and sisters, she was preceded in death by her husband John J. Pickett. Dorothy is survived by her children Wayne, Deborah and Patricia; her grandchildren Jennifer, Christina, Catherine and Stephanie; eight great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave, Norfolk, VA. Father Eric Ayers will officiate the funeral mass on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 6400 Newport Ave, Norfolk, VA. Interment will take place after the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6329 E. Virginia Beach, VA.
