Mabel Eleanor Hansen, the daughter of Edward Henry and Mattie (Demilt) Sykes, was born on July 21, 1902 on a farm north of Ruskin, NE. She passed away on May 9, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson at the age of 101 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Mabel attended Country Summit School through the 8th grade. She then moved to Ruskin at age 14 and attended Ruskin High School graduating in 1922.

She was united in marriage to Chris Hansen on September 29, 1925 at her parent's home in Ruskin, NE. This union was blessed with three children. They lived on a farm north of Oak and south of Ruskin until 1957 when they moved to Nelson.

Mabel was a member of the Friendly Neighbor Club, Senior Citizens, District 2 Club of Ruskin and the Nelson United Community Church of Christ. During her life all of her children have each celebrated their 50th year wedding anniversary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Chris on May 8, 1975, two grandsons, Doug Hansen and Gregory Hansen, two brothers, Vergil Sykes and Evon Sykes and three sisters, Opal Meyer, Perle Sykes and Helen Stiles.

Survivors include her sons, Donald and wife Mona of Davenport, NE; and Kenneth and wife Donna of Ruskin, NE; one daughter, Mary Ann Striggow and husband Allen of Olympia, WA; two sister-in-laws, Martha Sykes of Nelson, NE; and Mabel Rondeau of La Grange Park, IL; eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2004 at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, with Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry officiating. Music will be "Have Thine Own Way" and "Good Night and Good Morning", with Alfred & Janelle Hanson as soloists and Betty McKevitt as organist.

Pallbearers are Corey Hansen, Chris Hansen, Raymond Hansen, Wayne Hansen, Joe Hansen and Brandon Spore. Honorary Pallbearers were Dennis Hansen, Patricia Spore, Gloria Wilson, Diana Leigh, Michael Striggow and Bruce Striggow.

Memorials may be given in care of the family.

Interment will be in the Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin, NE.
