Mary E. Rhodes

Mary Elizabeth Burkholder Rhodes, 91, of Dayton, Va., died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at The Bridgewater Home. She had been in failing health for several weeks.

Mary was born on March 20, 1917, to Oliver Atlee Burkholder and Anna Grace Showalter Burkholder. She grew up on a produce and dairy farm along the banks of Dry River and Muddy Creek near Rushville. She had many pleasant memories of growing fruits and vegetables and selling them in the Harrisonburg community from a springboard wagon drawn by a horse. Mary accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized in the Oak Grove Old Order Mennonite Church. She received a diploma from the Chicago School of Nursing and spent her young adult years as a traveling nurse in various parts of Virginia and for two years in West Virginia.

On Nov. 30, 1944 she married Raleigh Dewitt ("R. D.") Rhodes Jr., her sweetheart of nine years who lived on the other side of Rushville. Together, they joined the Bank Mennonite congregation in the Rushville community and raised a family of seven: Winston and Charlotte (Kiser) Rhodes of Weyers Cave, Galen and Sharon (Moyers) Rhodes of Dayton, Daniel ("D.J.") Rhodes of Reistville, Pa., James and Leanna (Showalter) Rhodes of Harrisonburg, Grace Rhodes of Dayton, Elsa and Leonard Bergey of Chesapeake Va., and Raleigh Ill., and Patricia (Ranck) Rhodes of Dayton.

She is survived by 21 grandchildren and their spouses and 23 great-grandchildren (in parentheses); Gloria Rhodes and Bradley Lehman (Afton and Cormac), Winston D. Jr. and Renae (Emswiler) Rhodes (Erin, Bailey, and Sidney), and Wesley and Stephanie (Kipps) Rhodes; Diana and Michael Good (Joshua and Forrest), Myron and Megan (Schaefer) Rhodes (Leanna, Bonita, Lacy and John) and step-grandchild, Zachary Miller; Danielle and Peter Hostetler (Zane, Jenna, Evan, and Ryan), Brian Rhodes (Hope), Daryl and Kirsten (Barley) Rhodes (Kinsey), and Stephen Rhodes; Candice and Thomas Mast (Claire and Eliza), Martin and Sylvia (Witmer) Rhodes (Elliot and Vincent), Carmen and Jason Showalter (Dara and Lydia), Anita, Philip, Rebekah, and Dietrich Rhodes; David Bergey; Matthew, Brydon, and Lanae Rhodes.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, R. D., who died Aug. 5, 1991, and three grandchildren: twins Danae and Danita, and Briana, children of Raleigh and Patricia Rhodes.

She is also survived by a sister, Nellie and husband, Ward Landes, and a sister-in-law, Ethel (Mrs. Henry) Burkholder.

Besides homemaking, Mary found fulfillment in gardening and greenhouse work, selling encyclopedia sets, Sewing Circle, assistant manager of the original Dutch Foods store in Dayton, Noodle-making Project for the Va. Mennonite Relief Sale, The Jolly Seventeeners Club, and about 30 years of wintering in Pinecraft, Fla. She and R. D. became charter members of the Dayton Mennonite Church in their senior years.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Dayton Mennonite Church Sunday, April 26 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Ministers Daryl Driver, Herman Reitz, Roman Miller and Lewis Martin will conduct the funeral and graveside service at Dayton Mennonite Church Monday, April 27 at 10:30 a.m. Her body will be taken to the church with viewing at 9:30 until 10:15 a.m.
