PHIL SLAUGHTER

Phil Slaughter, for many years one of Linn county's most highly respected citizens, died at his home on E. Lake street, Tuesday, aged 80 years, 2 months and 14 days. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. There was a short service and prayer at the home and the cortege proceeded to Peden Chapel, where at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J. W. Green preached the sermon.
Mr. Slaughter was active in his community, and every worthy undertaking met with his full support. Held the office of Justice of the Peace for a bout 25 years. He was born in Howard county, Mo., June 23, 1848. His parents were Lewis and Nancy M. Slaughter, and his father died when he was 5 years old. The family came to Linn County in 1855. He married Rebecca Wright in 1870. 10 children were born to this union, 4 dying in early childhood. His wife died July 3, 1890. On Oct. 16, 1896, he married Mrs. Louise Smith. One child, a daughter, Mrs. Earl Pitts, was born of this union.
He resided on his farm until the death of his wife, Dec. 13, 1925, when he moved to Marceline, residing with his grandson, Virgil Slaughter.
He leaves to mourn his loss 7 daughters, 2 step-daughters and 1 stepson, all of whom were at his bedside with the exception of Mrs. Emma Sights, of Glendale, California. He also leaves 20 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 sister, Mrs. Louise Phillips, of Marceline.

Philip Slade SLAUGHTER was the fifth son and tenth child born to Lewis Edgecomb and Nancy Margaret (Phillips) SLAUGHTER. He was married to Rebecca Jane WRIGHT on the 13 February in 1870. They were the parents of nine children. Rebecca died on 3 July, 1890. On 16 Oct, 1896 he married Mrs. Louise (Baer) SMITH and one child was born of this union.
