Shirley Goodson Gabriel (S.G.)

April 14, 1931-June 29, 2018

Born in Lincoln County, S.G. was the youngest of six children born to the late Paul L. Gabriel Sr. and Lettie Goodson Gabriel. He was also predeceased by an infant daughter Elizabeth Ann Gabriel; sister, Betty Gabriel Ross; and brothers, Paul L. Gabriel, Jr., James Bowers Gabriel, Charles A. Gabriel, and Richard Steve Gabriel.

S.G. graduated from Lincolnton High School where he and his siblings excelled in every sport. He earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone. He was elected student body president and received numerous awards and recognition in football throughout the state. After graduation, he was a faithful member of the Appalachian Alumni Association, serving a term as president. He was a charter member of the Appalachian Athletic Hall of Fame and Lincoln County Athletic Hall of Fame. His greatest joy was reuniting with App's "Duggins Boys" who played for Coach E.C. Duggins in the 40's and 50's. A strong bond continues among these very fine men and their families.

After college he served in the US Army then returned home to teach and coach at Appalachian High School and Rock Hill High School. He then began his Human Resources career with Burlington Industries and retired from Stonecutter Mills Corporation.

An avid golfer, he and his "dirty dozen" friends played in rain, sleet, snow, and humid 90 degree weather. He delighted family and friends by sharing his beautiful roses (140 bushes). He was requested to make chocolate and coconut pies and pound cakes for gatherings and social events.

As a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, he was brought up to respect, serve and love others. In 1976 he and several friends organized a Men's Breakfast group that met every Wednesday morning. Then they were off to play golf and eat lunch at Strawberry Hill. This fellowship has thrived for 42 years. Through the years, S.G was actively involved in leadership roles in the church as well as the community. He was a friend to all.

S.G. and his wife Betty were married nearly 58 years. Their devoted son, James Christopher, who resides in Charlotte, faithfully cared for his dad and mom.
