In 1914 Robert registered for the armed services and was called up in 1915. He was a Corporal with the Canadian Army Service Corps, 2nd Divisional Train, constructing elevators.
While overseas he returned to Scotland and married Jane Dunsmore in 1918. Then after settling in Vancouver they returned again to Scotland in 1921 with their baby daughter Irene.
