Ninth of 13 children born to Andrew Heggie and his first wife Agnes Young.

In 1909 he immigrated to Saskatchewan where his brothers John and Robert were working, then to British Columbia where he married Agnes Colquhoun McNab in 1912.

Agnes had been working in Vancouver City as a domestic in the home of his married sister Margaret Gilbraith, where his sister Helen (Nellie) was also living.

He was working as a butcher when he registered for military service in 1915.
