Mrs. Mary Elsie Messick, 94, of Springer, New Mexico died in Colfax General Hospital Saturday, May 13.
Services were held Tuesday, May 16, in First United Methodist Church, Springer, and burial was in a Springer Cemetery.
Mrs. Messick and her husband, the late Jesse Messick, were members of families who were early settlers in Collingsworth County.
The former Mary Elsie Langford was born January 19, 1894, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Langford.
She married Jesse Paul Messick November 16, 1913.
Mr. and Mrs. Messick moved to New Mexico in a covered wagon and homesteaded at Malpie.
Later they sold their homestead and returned to Wellington. For several years they opened the Blue Front Service Station three miles north of Wellington on Highway 203 at Haskell Street.
About 1939 they returned to New Mexico and developed large ranch holdings at Abbott. This remained their home until failing health made it necessary for them to move into Springer. Mrs. Messick was a member of First United Methodist Church in Springer.
Mr. Messick died in 1987.
Surviving Mrs. Messick are three daughters, Jessie Mae Alexander of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Anna Fern Randall of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Mary Juanita Rosso of Walnut Creek, California, three sons, E.P. Messick of Dexter, New Mexico, Norman Ray Messick of Klondike, Texas., and Harlan Wayne Messick of Boerne, Texas.
