Otto Wesley Chaney, a prominent retired resident of Newton, died Sunday, July 26, 1953, in St. Vincent Hospital of Taylorville. He was 79 years old.

Mr. Chaney was born May 10, 1874, near Clay City, a son of Noah and Nanie Chaney. When 18 years old, he moved to the Hidalgo community, where he resided for many years with the exception of three years he spent working in a department store in Indianola, Iowa. He first married Daisy Reed of Hidalgo, who lived only a few years after their marriage. They were the parents of three children, two of whom died in early childhood. One daughter, Mrs. John Vanatta of Burbank, California, survives.

In 1903 he married Ada Bilby and they became the parents of seven children: Walter of Yale, Mrs. R. E. Cummins of Taylorville, Fred of Indanapolis, Kenneth of Pekin, Raymond of Wilmington, and Lucille of Nashville, Tennessee. Another daughter, Buella, died when two years old.

Most of Mr. Chaney's life was spent in the Hidalgo and Yale vicinities, where he engaged in farming and raising livestock. He was always interested in community and civic affairs, serving as a member of a school board for a number of years, as cemetery trustee, and in various other community posts.

Surviving in addition to his wife and children are two brothers, L. L. Chaney and Ralph Chaney of Hidalgo, two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hocking of Greenup and Mrs. Coila Shields of Tuscola, twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Chaney was a member of the First Baptist Church.
