She was born Leie in Warsaw when it was part of Russia, before it became Poland, to Leib and Esther (nee Mittelburg) Schwarzfoks,(black fox, in English) one of twin girls. After her Father passed away in 1898, her 31 year old Mother took the 5 children to live in London a year later, probably because of anti-semitism in Poland. She was 6 years old.
The British 1901 Census shows that when Esther renamed her children after their immigration to England, and gave them more British sounding names, Leie became Charlotte. In the 1911 Census, her name was back to Leah.
Her Mother Esther was a dressmaker who remarried and moved the Family to Mile End Old Town in London which is Stepney, and where her second Husband had a dresses shop.
In 1916, Leah married David Abrahams, and soon after that, he volunteered to join the British Army as one of the Jewish Royal Fusiliers, fighting in Palestine to free it from the Ottoman Turks. He was gone for 2 years! When he returned a hero, he received 2 medals, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal, and the couple quickly immigrated to the US so that Leah could be with her twin Sister Sadie and her Husband in New York City.
Leah and her Husband cited Sadie and her Husband Isadore as their contacts in the United States when they arrived, and lived with them for a time. Then they got an apartment just around the corner, so close that it was only a one minute walk away.
A year later, she gave birth to a Son named Harold. When he was 2, she took him to see her Mother and Family in London.
She passed away shortly after that, when he was just 5 years old.
She was only 32.
