She was born in Dott, West Virginia, on April 11, 1934, to her parents Albert Brunk and Dorothy Davis. She was a coalminer's daughter, the third child of eight.
Dee grew up in West Virginia, graduated from high school in Princeton and attended Nursing School in Charleston. She worked as a nurse for the CIA in Washington D.C. during the early 1960s. The memory of the entire capital city in mourning over the death of President Kennedy was a sight she remembered the rest of her life.
In 1964, Dee joined the Army and rose to the rank of Major in the US Army Nurse Corps. She served in various locations in Europe, Africa, and the United States. Dee specialized in pediatrics and cared for many children, soldiers, and civilians who desperately needed her expert care. She enjoyed her travels and had many adventures throughout her life. Dee retired to Richmond, Virginia, where she volunteered with veterans' organizations and had many friends.
Five of Dee's siblings preceded her in death: Russell, Evelyn, Joyce, Wayne, and Doug. Her surviving relatives include her brother, Charles Brunk residing in Kansas (married to Delcie), her sister, Kathleen Brunk Goad residing in Villamont VA (married to Gary), as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Maude will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 11:00am at Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel. Interment will follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Rd, Amelia, VA 23002.
