ELMORE WILKINSON, b. 25 September 1829, Dunkard TWP, Greene County Pa.; d. 28 January 1892, Wood County, West Virginia (Bull Run Road) Route 1, Waverly, W.Va

.. Farmer

He m.28 April 1853 in Morgantown, Mononghelia County, W.Va. MARTHA LYNCH( 1836PA-1904WV d/o PIERCE LYNCH and ELENER LOUGH)

Notes for ELMORE WILKINSON: (per Scottie Dean WILKINSON) Elmore served in the Civil war from 12 August 1862 until 29 June 1865. Cpl Company G 10th & 15th West Virginia Vol. Inf.

Elmore bought 335 acres in Union District, Wood County, Virginia (West Virgina) from John Triplett and others for a total cost of $1,154.00 (Deed book 17 page 70). He bought it on time and the deal was not completed until 1860 (Deed book 20, page 23). He sold 49 1/2 acres to R. P. Ingram that same year. (Deed book 20, page 569). He later divided his farm fairly equally among his five children. My grandfather Otie received 62 1/2 acres, (Deed book 74, Page 237)less 1/4 acre deeded to the school board. (Deed book 28, Page 435).

Elmore was the first Caucasian ever to live on this land. Prior to Elmore it was owned by speculators and absentee landlords and their heirs. As far as can be known, Elmore was the first human ever to live on this land. The Indians did not live in this area. They used it as a hunting ground. They did build temporary shelters along the Ohio river while hunting but there has never been found any evidence that the Indians lived in Wood County on a permanent basis. Elmore lived on this land his entire life, except the three years he was in the Civil War.
