U.S. Senator, San Francisco Mayor, Politician. She served as the 38th Mayor of San Francisco, California from 1978 to 1988 and as a United States senator from California 1992 until her death in 2023. At 90, she was the oldest sitting U.S. Senator. She was the daughter of Leon Goldman, a surgeon, and his wife Betty (née Rosenburg), a model. Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. She was married thrice. She married Jack Berman in 1956. They had a daughter before divorcing in 1959. She remarried to Bertram Feinstein in 1962 and they remained married until his death from cancer in 1978. In 1980, she married Richard C. Blum until he also died from cancer in 2022. She graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in 1951 and from Stanford University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. After graduation, she was a fellow at the Coro Foundation in San Francisco from 1955 to 1956. In 1960, she was appointed by California Governor Pat Brown to the California Women's Parole Board. She remained on the board until 1966. She was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969. During her tenure on the Board of Supervisors, she survived two assassination attempts. After San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated in November 1978, Feinstein became acting mayor, San Francisco's first woman mayor. She was reelected and served as mayor for ten years. She ran unsuccessfully for Governor of California in 1990. In 1992, she won her seat in the U.S. Senate during a special election. She was reelected for five additional terms, serving for 31 years. In the fall of 2020, media reports indicated that Feinstein was experiencing cognitive decline and short-term memory loss. She responded that there was no cause for concern and that she had no plans to leave the Senate. In early 2023, she announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024, but she died in office in September 2023.
