Ignacio J. Baca, age 89, a life-long resident of Tomé, peacefully joined our Lord and Savior at his home on Sunday, April 6.
Ignacio proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a heavily decorated soldier who was awarded two Purple Hearts along with many other distinguished metals. During the war, Ignacio was hit by enemy fire. The bullet that was meant to take his life was stopped by a cigarette lighter that was given to him by a friend. He and his family never stopped thanking the Lord for that friend and the cigarette lighter.
During his life, Ignacio endured many surgeries and came through them all with flying colors as he was a man of great strength and endured much pain. He moved back to New Mexico in 1989 and started his dream of owning his own ranch. Ignacio was a farmer with a green thumb, and his alfalfa fields were always meticulously taken care of. His family garden was always filled with beautiful chile, corn, tomatoes and many other vegetables that he always generously shared with family and friends. Even though he was a strong, highly devoted soldier and was a sunup to sundown farmer, his pride and joy was his rose garden that adorned the whole front of his home in Tomé. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends but especially by his son, Salomon, who when they would greet they would salute each other and Salomon would say to his father "El Capitan!"
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances G. Baca; son, Wenses L. Baca; daughter, Roseann Esquivel; grandson, Rene Esquivel; father, Ruperto Baca; mother, Rosela Sevada; three brothers, Faustin, Salomon and Roman Baca and two sisters, Reina Zamora and Mela Holden.
Ignacio is survived by his loving son, Salomon J. Baca, and daughter-in-law (whom was like a daughter to him), Clara Baca; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one sister, Soila Moya of Valencia. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
All services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomé, beginning with a visitation on Wednesday, April 9, at 5 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Thursday, April 10, at 10 a.m. with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jose Hernandez presiding. Interment will follow at the Tomé Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leroy, Morris and Roland Vaisa, Wenses D. and Dino Baca, Steven Chavez and Adam Lovato.
